TOOTH PASTE

i think tooth paste off the nmh2 soundtrack is really good.
people are usually pretty positive about nmh2s soundtrack, if nothing else
about the game. phillistine and destroy resort always get brought up.
i like tooth paste because of the way it portrays despair and resignment.
the song plays against a dusty sunset where travis has to mindlessly slash his way
through the ghetto to get to the next fight, alice, the penultimate boss of the game.

at first the instrumentation is really light. setting the mood, it kind of feels like an afterschool evening.
you know the kind? like having busted up knees after playing soccer with your friends in the summer,
and your ass is planted on the concrete sidewalk, and youre chattering with your friends about something inane,
and the sun is getting lower, just enough to chill the air a bit, and your mom is trying to rush you into the car.
the tone of the music gradually gets darker, lower, filled with that casual dread. not even dripping with tension,
the suffering is too mundane. before you know it the pitch picks up; the twang of the guitar is
relentless and monotonous, the mood is bittersweet.
on the way home from soccer your mom tells you that your grandpa has died, or something like that.

at this point in the story, travis is reevaluating his relationship with killing.
alice is doing the same, but unlike travis she sees no way out of the pit she has dug for herself.
the enemies leading up to her fight are living in abandoned apartments, skulking in alleyways,
all under the giant mural of travis's smiling face; he gazes upward and to the left in a pose
that looks a little inspired by the famous photo of che guevara.
slick motherfucker with a glint in his eye. he made it out; why cant they?
